Customer Challenge
Burns & McDonnell, a national engineering firm headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri is the primary tenant in the four-story office building located at 9400 Ward Parkway. In an effort to continue their LEED initiatives, Burns & McDonnell took a hard look at their existing operations in a Comprehensive Energy Study performed by their own Energy Services Division. Their major goal was to increase energy efficiency, while reducing operating expenses. The HVAC equipment in the building was closely studied by the team. The results indicated a condensing boiler system was a good energy saving project.
DMI Solution
Design Mechanical, a long time HVAC service provider to the building, was called to assist Burns & McDonnell in the system design and satisfy their energy efficiency goals. It was decided to install two new Patterson Kelley MACH condensing boilers to efficiently handle low heating load conditions during the spring and fall. The new boilers will assist the existing steam boilers for the higher load conditions.
Highlights
Potential energy savings of approximately 20 - 30% have been modeled. From a building owners’ perspective, the life of the existing boiler system is extended and operating expenses are reduced for the tenant. Design Mechanical also performs chiller maintenance and controls service at the complex.
